Skydiving in Maine with Dad
I had done this before. Just last August I had strapped myself to a man I had met only an hour before, boarded an airplane and, at 11,000 feet, willingly scooted my butt toward an open door before jumping, with absolutely no reservations, out into the clear blue sky. So why? Why, this time, was [...]

Learning to Ski at Lost Valley Ski Area SKI 101 style.
Finding a new challenge at Lost Valley
by Carl Natale @Schusster
First thing I notice walking into Lost Valley Ski Area is the Learning Center. It’s an area on a mild slope. I hesitate calling it a slope. It’s a bump. The elevation gain is about what most people experience getting on their front porch.
And the [...]
@Popham
Although the summer is over, it’s not too late to visit Popham Beach State Park. It’s a great chance for a walk that offers views of the islands off the coast. You can round the corner and walk along the Kennebec River until you get to Fort Popham.
Fort Popham is a coastal defense land battery at the [...]
Blue Skies and Whitewater - @Jump and Raft -
The minute-long, 120+ miles-per-hour freefall was nothing like I had anticipated. Communicating with taps and hand signals, we somersaulted back and forward and spun while the landscape and blue sky rushed by. I didn’t shut my eyes, or my mouth, even once. The only things louder than the rush of wind were my adrenaline-laced whoops and hollers. When Cleave released our parachute at 5,000 feet and it filled with air, gently tugging us upward for a moment, I felt a bit sad. A few seconds later I found that I was enjoying the quiet and the spectacular view of Katahdin as Cleave pointed out other landmarks, taught me how to work the ropes that controlled the speed and direction of the chute, and I attempted to move my lips that had become plastered to my gums. Cleave taught me how to land safely and with a gentle bump and skid I found myself on terrafirma and in the arms of my euphoric sisters who had jumped before me.
