Saddleback Maine is an excellent choice for novice skiers
By Carl Natale
I heard a lot of good things about skiing at Saddleback Mountain. What had me really interested was its reputation for being very friendly to beginner skiers. And it lived up to it when my wife and I went skiing this weekend.
I have to confess that I picked a tough weekend for reviewing [...]
Maine mountains expect a bit of snow ahead of holiday skiing
By Carl Natale
Maine’s mountains may collect a couple inches of snow Thursday night. The warm temperatures will give way to cooler temps Saturday and Sunday. The weather wonks are talking about low 30s and 20s in the mountains.
Monday will cool down even more but no other precipitation is expected until mid week. Maybe Wednesday. But [...]
Plenty of choices for fun on Maine’s Ski Slopes
By Carl Natale
Enjoy the balmy weather while it lasts. We’re going to be warmer Friday before the temperatures drop and a storm front moves into Maine. Maine’s mountains should see some light snow Saturday. Forecasters are still trying to guess how much.
Bikes, that’s right… bikes, on the ski slopes
Maine Public Radio had this feature about [...]
Super weekend in the Maine Mountains
By Carl Natale
Happy Groundhog Day! It’s happy because Puxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and went back to sleep for what we hope will be six weeks of very snowy winter. Unfortunately, that doesn’t save the Downtown Showdown scheduled for Friday in Portland. The event is canceled due to lack of snow.
Luckily your ski plans don’t [...]
More snow to refresh Maine’s ski mountains - Maine Ski Report via Maine’s Ski Bum @Schusster
January 19 2012
By Carl Natale
That was fun last week. Let’s try it again. There’s a storm that’s expected to drop about four or five inches in Maine overnight Thursday. Maybe more in the higher elevations. It should be done falling by the time we head to work Friday morning.
Right behind that is another storm system. [...]
Snow Dances Pay Off For Maine Ski Areas
By Carl Natale
We’re still digging out from the snowstorm at Schusster HQ. About eight inches near Lewiston/Auburn with no sign of a wintry mix. Just snow. And it’s piling up on the mountains just as much.
Expect the ski areas to report some big numbers Friday morning. Then a wintry mix is forecast for Friday. Perhaps [...]
Celebrate the snow we have on Maine slopes - Maine Ski Report via @Schusster, Maine Ski Bum
Dec 5th 2011
By Carl Natale
I swear it snowed in Westbrook today. For five minutes. Maybe. Any chance there’s more of that in the mountains?
And that’s about it for the weekend. A slight chance of snow Saturday though. Yeah, slight. Cheer up. Looks like there’s a good storm coming next week. But in the meantime, there are [...]
Skydiving in Maine with Dad
I had done this before. Just last August I had strapped myself to a man I had met only an hour before, boarded an airplane and, at 11,000 feet, willingly scooted my butt toward an open door before jumping, with absolutely no reservations, out into the clear blue sky. So why? Why, this time, was [...]
#92~ Reach for fun with Stand Up Paddling (SUP) In Maine
Its no surprise there is a growing interest in Stand Up Paddling in Maine. Maine has a wide variety of waves, beaches, wildlife, and what better way to enjoy your day than floating on a large board and paddling or surfing the summer waves. There are few areas in Maine where you can rent one [...]
Black Mountain of Maine is a great place to start, lessons, terrain, lodge.
Black Mountain in Rumford is a great place for beginner skiers. It has the basics for a great day. There are three elements you need when you look for a place to start skiing. You’re going to need lessons, a variety of terrain and some place to not ski.
Let’s start with lessons. It takes a [...]
Learning to Ski at Lost Valley Ski Area SKI 101 style.
Finding a new challenge at Lost Valley
by Carl Natale @Schusster
First thing I notice walking into Lost Valley Ski Area is the Learning Center. It’s an area on a mild slope. I hesitate calling it a slope. It’s a bump. The elevation gain is about what most people experience getting on their front porch.
And the [...]
@Popham
Although the summer is over, it’s not too late to visit Popham Beach State Park. It’s a great chance for a walk that offers views of the islands off the coast. You can round the corner and walk along the Kennebec River until you get to Fort Popham.
Fort Popham is a coastal defense land battery at the [...]
Blue Skies and Whitewater - @Jump and Raft -
The minute-long, 120+ miles-per-hour freefall was nothing like I had anticipated. Communicating with taps and hand signals, we somersaulted back and forward and spun while the landscape and blue sky rushed by. I didn’t shut my eyes, or my mouth, even once. The only things louder than the rush of wind were my adrenaline-laced whoops and hollers. When Cleave released our parachute at 5,000 feet and it filled with air, gently tugging us upward for a moment, I felt a bit sad. A few seconds later I found that I was enjoying the quiet and the spectacular view of Katahdin as Cleave pointed out other landmarks, taught me how to work the ropes that controlled the speed and direction of the chute, and I attempted to move my lips that had become plastered to my gums. Cleave taught me how to land safely and with a gentle bump and skid I found myself on terrafirma and in the arms of my euphoric sisters who had jumped before me.
