Maine Ski Report from @Schusster Maine Ski Bum
The weather forecasts have snow falling on Maine today - especially “over the higher elevations.” (Let’s call those ski mountains.) Not much is expected to fall, and it’s not expected to accumulate because the ground is still warm. Does that mean it’s time to break out the skis?
Sunday River has a habit of opening trails on Halloween. But they’re not predicting a white Halloween - yet. But you still can hit the slopes this weekend (sans skis) for Sunday Shiver’s Mystery on the Mountain. It’s a haunted Chondola ride up theNorth Peak. It’s part of the Pumpkinhead Festival.
There are warmer but less scary events coming. The Ski Museum of Maine will induct its class of 2011 into the museum at a dinner Friday night at Lost Valley. Then the museum is taking its Fireside Chats to Portland next week. “Down-Mountain and Cross-Country: 140 Years of Skiing in Maine” is a 50-minute slideshow of historical photos. It can be seen noon Nov. 3at the Maine Charitable Mechanic Association, 519 Congress St. (207-773-8396).
Speaking of November, Warren Miller’s Like There’s No Tomorrow is coming to Maine soon. The annual film features breathtaking scenery and ski moves that are designed to get you to look forward to winter. It runs 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11., at Merrill Auditorium in Portland. This year’s film has a segment on two skiers Chris Davenport and Hugo Harrison as they tackle Tuckerman’s Ravine on Mount Washington.
