This leisurely-paced walking tour carves a path through the streets of the charming Old Port. A hundred years ago this area was home to fish houses, canneries, industrial factories and textile mills. Unlike a century ago, when the air was heavy with industrial smoke, today the air is fragrant with the fresh ocean breeze and scents of coffee houses, bakeries, and award-winning restaurants, all tempting passersby at they wind their way through the scenic narrow streets.
Our friendly and engaging tour guides will take you to seven Old Port venues where you will have an opportunity to sample delectable, Maine-inspired foods and obtain a behind-the-scenes look at those who craft these culinary delights. Along the way, you will learn about the colorful local history unique to the “Port City.”
As you sample the fare at the various stops, our tour guides and proprietors will reveal the history behind their industry, the uniquely Maine products that are used and a little hint or two as to why they are simply award-winning year after year!
The Port City Beer Tour Showcases Maine’s Microbrew Heritage!
Often referred to as a Nirvana of craft brewing, Maine has the fourth highest concentration of micro-breweries in the country and is home to many respected
breweries, brewpubs, and beer gardens. Taste while you learn what goes into your favorite beers, how they are brewed, and the sheer variety and creativity of the craft brew movement in Maine!
This leisurely-paced, half mile walking tour carves a path through the streets of the Old Port, once home to rum runners and speakeasies, now a bustling community of beer aficionados! We will be visiting four locations including Maine’s first brew-pub since prohibition, a multi-award-winning brewery, Maine’s original “ale house”, and wind up in a beer garden deemed by Imbibe magazine as “one of the 100 best places to drink beer in America” with 25 drafts, 2 hand pumps and over 300 bottles to choose from! Sampling Maine’s finest at each stop, you will learn the history of brewing in Maine and the United States, taste some of the ingredients that bring distinctiveness to these unique recipes, and learn how American style brewing compares with international styles. You’ll also have the opportunity to interact with one of Portland’‘s finest brew masters, often on the job.
Our friendly and engaging tour guides will offer you a behind-the-scenes look at those who craft and serve one of America’s favorite beverages, and share with you the unique local history of beer brewing and drinking here in the ‘Port City.” Light snacks will be served and the tour will end just two blocks from our original starting point.
Enjoy a ride on a beautiful trolley while you savor the flavors of Portland, now known as the “foodiest small town in America!” (Bon Appetit, October, 2009) We will take you on a 2.5-hour journey to explore and taste just how Portland has become a culinary destination.
Our entertaining guides, along with a fun-loving trolley driver will take you to several destinations to sample foods on board, and you will also disembark to tour and enjoy tastes at three unique locations. Along the way, you will learn about the current culinary scene, our amazing food artisans, restaurants, chefs and brew masters all making their mark with their creative delights.
