Coos Canyon
Coos Canyon Rock & Gift has a wide variety of gems and rocks in their gift shop which also serves delicious sandwiches and ice cream. Coos Canyon is a wonderful place for those looking to relax in some cool pools of river water, but not the place to conduct a serious rock hunting expedition. Although Swift River is not scattered with mica or tourmaline, both of which are more prevalent at Mount Mica or Mount Apetite, some gold is still found scattered within the river pockets. A short gold panning demonstration can be given at the gift shop and pans can be rented for a cheap price. Some serious miners can be seen setting up sifters along the river bank, but for the most part Swift River is a nice place to spend a weekend to relax, and several camp sites are located downstream from the gift shop. There are several good hiking trails and even an inactive volcano which is accessible by foot close to Byron, Maine. Whether looking to pan for gold on a nice sunny day or even get a tan and jump of some canyons, Coos Canyon is a great place to visit.
