Bagheera

Bagheera is a vintage Alden, featuring long overhangs, a sweet and graceful sheer line and a long bowsprit. For construction, Alden turned to the rich shipbuilding heritage of Maine and found able craftsmen at Rice Bros. Shipyard in East Boothbay.  In the 1920s, Bagheera sailed in the Bermuda Race at least once before being delivered to the Great Lakes, where she won the annual Chicago-Mackinac Race for several  years running.

In her more than 80 years of cruising the world’s oceans, Bagheera has crossed the Atlantic, cruised areas of the Pacific, including the Galapagos, and spent many years in the Caribbean Sea. In the 1980s, Bagheera was fitted out in San Diego for the passenger trade. She was transported back home to Maine in the spring of 2002 to serve Portland Schooner Company.

Wendemeen

The 88-foot schooner Wendameen, like Bagheera, was designed by the famed yacht designer John Alden. She was built in East Boothbay, Maine, and launched in 1912 when she took center stage in the golden era of fast, sleek ocean schooners. Inactive since the 1930s, she was thoroughly restored in the late 1980s and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Wendameen is Coast Guard certified for 14 overnight passengers plus crew or 49 day sail passengers.

Offering Two-Hour Windjammer Sails

Board the Bagheera or the Wendameen for a two-hour sail on Casco Bay, The perfect way to experience the beauty of the Maine coast, complete with lighthouses, seals, seabirds, and the rugged coastline. Pack a meal, bring your favorite wine or beer and sit back and relax as our courteous and professional crew share their knowledge of the sea, sailing and local history. Or, if you feel inspired, join the crew to hoist the sails or take a turn at the ship’s wheel. All ages are welcome! Whether you’re nine years old or 99, sailing aboard our Maine schooners is a unique adventure. The Bagheera is certified by the U.S. Coast Guard to carry 48 passengers; the Wendameen is certified to carry 14 overnight passengers plus crew, or 49 day-sail passengers.

Overnight Windjammer Excursions

Come aboard the Wendameen for a unique overnight windjammer experience that only Portland Schooner Company can provide.  For this special adventure, we set sail in the afternoon and return the following morning.

• Experience the stunning beauty of Casco Bay’s islands and coastline as you slice through the water on your way to your evening destination
• Help sail for the afternoon or simply relax and enjoy the ride
• Guests are welcome to bring aboard soft drinks, beer or wine
• After we settle in for the night in one of Casco Bay’s many quiet island anchorages, savor a full dinner at sunset
• Gaze at the stars, forget your cares and imagine life during the classic age of sail
• Wake the next morning to the aroma of a delicious hot breakfast including freshly baked goods, coffee and tea
• Relish the quiet morning aboard this historic vessel, then help raise the anchor, hoist the sails and return to port in time to enjoy a day of shopping, sightseeing and fun in Portland or other points in Maine.
