Lakes are great, you can swim, fish, boat, skate, snowmobile and camp around them.  Maine has an abundunce of lakes, from large to small, from narrow to round, from deep to shallow.  There are more than two thousand named Lakes in Maine,… if you count all the water bodies that are over a 20,000. Below are some descriptions of a few, with links to the others…

Moosehead Lake is the largest lake in the U.S. state of Maine. Situated in the Longfellow Mountains in the Maine Highlands Region, the lake is the source of the Kennebec River. Towns that border the lake include Greenville to the south and Rockwood to the northwest. There are over 80 islands in the lake, the largest being Sugar Island.

Rangeley Lake is located in Franklin County, Maine in the United States. It is fed by several streams. Its waters flow out from the lake’s northwestern end into the short Rangeley River, then into Mooselookmeguntic Lake, and ultimately into the Androscoggin River, Merrymeeting Bay, the lower Kennebec River, the Gulf of Maine and the Atlantic Ocean.
The lake is one of the major headwater lakes of the Androscoggin watershed. Its elevation is 1,518 feet (463 m) above sea level and its area is about 10 square miles (26 square km). The lake’s depth is shallow near the shore with a central basin averaging about 95 feet (29 m) deep (29 m). The maximum depth is 149 feet (45 m).
It occupies parts of the Franklin County’s Minor Civil Divisions of Rangeley and Rangeley Plantation. The town of Rangeley is located on the northeastern shore of Rangeley Lake.
Maneskootuk Island (also called Doctors Island) is in the eastern part of Rangeley Lake. In the western part there is a small group of islands collectively called South Bog Islands.

Sebago Lake is the deepest and second largest lake in the U.S. state of Maine. The lake is 316 feet (96 m) deep at its deepest point, with a mean depth of 101 feet (31 m), covers about 45 square miles (117 km2) in surface area, has a length of 12 miles (19 km) and a shoreline length of 105 miles (169 km).[2] The surface is around 270 feet (82 m) above sea level, so the deep bottom is below the present sea level. It is located in Cumberland County, Maine and bordered by the towns of Casco, Naples, Raymond, Sebago, Standish and Windham. The seasonally occupied town of Frye Island is on an island in the lake.
The lake is connected to Brandy Pond by the Songo River and eventually to Long Lake in Naples. The name comes from a local Native American tribe. The lake is drained primarily by the Presumpscot River. Prior to construction of a railroad in 1870, Sebago Lake was linked to Portland harbor by the Cumberland and Oxford Canal. The outlet to the river has been dammed since 1875 by the Eel Weir Dam and the Head Dam, owned and operated by the S. D. Warren Paper Mill.

Long Lake is an eleven mile (18 kilometer) lake between Naples and Harrison, Maine. It is connected to Brandy Pond through the Chute River. Long Lake was created by receding glaciers, and has many coves and rocks. Canal boats from Portland harbor reached Long Lake through the Cumberland and Oxford Canal, completed in 1832. The canal’s Songo Lock facilities still control Long Lake water level. Each November, Long Lake is drained by about 3 feet so that melting snow does not cause a flood in the spring. The lake is the site of many summer camps, including Camp Newfound, Camp Owatonna, Camp Takajo, and Camp Wildwood (actually located on nearby Wood’s Pond). The famous author, E.B. White, owned a vacation house on Long Lake in the North Bridgton section. Long Lake is the home of fictional character David Drayton in Stephen King’s 1980 novella, The Mist, which was made into a 2007 movie, The Mist. Long Lake is the story’s opening setting, as well as origin of the mysterious mist.
