#4 Sailing in Maine !

picture-12

Sailing in Maine is an opportunity of a lifetime. Islands too numerous to mention, sandy beaches, delightful views and abundant wildlife is a very unique experience in Maine. There are various ways to board your favorite vessel. First, you might want to choose what kind of vessel you would like to cruise on. A good choice should be a schooner or windjammer. A schooner is a type of sailing vessel characterized by the use of fore-and-aft sails on two or more masts, with the forward mast being shorter or the same highth as the rear masts. A windjammer is a type of large sailing ship built to carry cargo in the late nineteenth and early century. Windjammer is originally a German word, but was taken by Capt Frank Swift in 1934 when he started with an old cargo schooner and founded Maine Windjammer Cruises to take the rusticators out on sailing vacations. Windjammers are known for the grandest of merchant ships, with three to five large masts. Tours explore the coast from Kennebunkport to Rockland  ( one of the largest protected harbors on the East Coast ) and Bar Harbor. Portland Schooner sails two vintage schooners, offering a sail with a little bit of history. Located in Portland, at the Maine State Pier, Portland Schooner is a great way to view Casco Bay. You’ll encounter an unforgettable experience and the unspoiled beauty of Casco Bay as you sail among islands, wildlife, and local working lobster boats. Call them and let them know Maine Things To Do sent ya!
